Counselling – An Emotional Step?

In this, our 21st
century, there are more ways for us to communicate than ever before. The advent
of mobile telephony, portable computers and the Internet have made way for the
likes of "Social Media" and 'Instant Messaging' in a society that now demands
the facility to talk. How strange then, that the notion of communication has to
overcome such a stigmatic barrier when it wears the label of Counselling.
Counselling occurs in so many
forms every single day. As parents, we counsel our children. As friends, we
counsel our peers. As employers, we counsel our staff. As service providers, we
counsel our customers. As therapists we counsel our clients. As doctors we
counsel our patients. Counsellors are Therapists too, having undertaken
professionally accredited study and training in order to provide the service of
Listening Therapies. They are bound by the ethical guidelines and codes of
practice of societies such as the BACP and The National Counselling Society, alongside
many other specialist organisations that provide their own criteria and
professional standards. Counselling is about listening and talking, exploration
and discovery, learning and application. Unlike some therapies, it allows you
to control and develop your own 'recovery' – a state of renewed equilibrium and
coping mechanisms.
So, why and when do you need to
consult a Counsellor?
The answer is that when you are
experiencing emotional problems in your life that are impacting on your
day-to-day ability to cope, this is the time to seek counsel. Counsellors come
to the profession due to the high level of empathy that they evince. They are
the parent/friend/employer/therapist that we turn to in times of emotional
need, but with an insight into emotional wellbeing that transcends the usual
'relationship' we have with our peers. Counselling is about forging a
"therapeutic alliance"; put simply, the Counsellor joins you in embracing your
problems, sharing your thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviours, and
learning alongside you new ways to address and cope with them. Counselling is not
about applying a 'label' to you – it is non-judgmental, bound by ethical
practices and underpinned by probity.
At centres like LBhealthcare,
Counselling is one of the many "Health Training" services that are provided.
Many clients already benefit from the 'physical' health support services and
are now afforded the opportunity to focus on their emotional health too. The Counselling
service at LBhealthcare embraces many of the 'usual suspects' of emotional
distress; depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss - it also embraces
perhaps less-observable conditions such as eating disorders, abuse, personality
problems and addictions. Relationships, family crises, parenthood and
employment issues are all valued additions to the increasing advisory portfolio
and there are no topics that cannot be encompassed by the service.
