The five candidates to run in Fareham West’s forthcoming

Do you live in Fareham West? Vote on December 9th! Image by Alan Cleaver
by-election have been chosen.
People who sit on their backside and moan about the state of
their town, local government, crime rates, dog mess, parking fees, speed bumps,
budget cuts (good lord the list is endless – you only have to read this site to
know what we in Fareham all moan about), and then don’t go out and vote, really
get up my nose.
There is as much excuse for that level of hypocrisy as there
is for apathy. By which I mean there
isn’t any excuse.
We have all seen photographs in the press of saintly
candidates giving old ladies lifts to the polling stations. It’s a classic politician photo op – even if
the rest of us are secretly hoping said old lady, in the absence of ever having
been so concerned about previously, then votes for someone else. So what is our, perhaps more able-bodied,
excuse?
When it comes to local politics I point blankly refuse to
believe that classic Armchair Anarchist line, “there’s just no one worth voting
for”. Utter rubbish. There is always, always a candidate potentially
going to relate to our beliefs, our opinions and to our community in ways the
others don’t. Placing our vote allows us
to moan righteously.
By-election help:
If you’re unsure or new to the area, find out which Fareham
Ward you are resident in using the Borough Council’s checking tool here.
Candidates to stand as follows:
Stephen Day (Conservative)
Peter Doggett (Green)
Michael Prior (Labour)
Nick Gregory (Liberal Democrat)
Steve Richards (UKIP)
Interesting by-election fact:
Liberal Democrat candidate Nick Gregory stood for election
in Portchester, last year – for the Conservatives.

ReportThank you for ALL contributions and hey, Sal? I know you're after my job, my dear but seriously... try not to be responsible for me losing it ;) One more Fareham peep in the job queue is not what's needed.
My personal politics, I hope, are very much left at the door of FarehamPeople and ALL political debate and persuasions are encouraged! What was it that Voltaire fella is always misquoted as saying? Whatever the exact words it was along the lines of: I might disagree with it but I will fight for your right to say it.
Just make sure that on FarehamPeople you say it without swearing and make no personal attacks on anyone - stick to those two, tiny rules and we can get some really juicy debate going on!

ReportOr Mick, if you like, you could email it to Paula (community publisher for the site) at fareham@thelocalpeople.co.uk i know she more than most would love to hear from the somewhat left (and although I know she tries to remain impartial she is rubbish at it and now she is going to come and kick my backside) --- runs for cover.
