A Whole New Town To Be Built Next Door to Fareham

Earlier this year Fareham Borough Council announced it was

reactivating its similar 2006 plans to build a new town between Wickham and

North Fareham (the Knowle land).  If the

plans go ahead it will mean “up to” 8,000 homes being built on the land.

Campaigners against the plans are concerned about our

continuing loss of green spaces in England, the threat to wildlife and some

organisations suspect that the council have not gone about their consultation

in the correct fashion.

Earlier this month the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE)

launched a new postcard campaign on behalf of South Hampshire’s Unheard Voices

(SHUV), an alliance of over 35 organisations, with the aim of stopping this

development.  CPRE and SHUV are asking

you to send a postcard, as a matter of urgency, to the Minister for Housing and

Local Government.  Every household in

Wickham will receive a card, however postcards can also be picked up from two

shops in Wickham, either “Hemmings” or “Warwicks” in the Square.

The council are hailing it as an ecotown and as well as

promising their energy efficiency, they have pledged to keep at least 40% of

the town as a “green space”.

What will this mean for Fareham?  More congestion on our roads?  A greater demand for public services that no

way increase inline with the population levels?

Even fewer green spaces in the area?

Or job opportunities, eco-friendly homes and affordable housing?  Let us know what you think!

LOL. I think Ms Sal was having a bad day too. It'll be the lack of sunlight. :(

Speaking of which and completely unrelated, I have a great friend in Finland where it is dark by 2pm :/ I just couldn't cope I don't think!

Apologies for being curt....bad day ! That particular quote was someone on the radio news.
My point is that if groups are going to protest (and good luck to them) those in them need to stop distorting facts to try to gain extra support. 200 flats for example will take up a lot less land than 200 houses (not that Fareham needs more flats !). The "town the size of Petersfield" quote is misleading, as yes Petersfield has roughly the number of homes but they are mainly large family homes on large plots so cover a greater area than homes built to modern densities as the SDA would be, but people imagine the land area when they hear this instead of actually looking at the rough map.
Personally I would like the scheme scaled down and infrastructure in place with plenty of local participation before any home is built and then I would accept it.

hi cheesecake. i don't think anyone said houses did they? i sure couldn't find anyone at whom your curt response might be directed. perhaps i am not looking hard enough but that aside i don't really get your point. a house takes up land as does its garden or drive etc. anything else is surely named appropriately such as flats? if your point on how much open space is left open is one of legal and or council privy then i'd like it if you could elaborate for us common folk.

Will people stop saying "6-7000 houses", it is homes not houses and it makes a big difference to how much space is developed and how much is left as open space. There should be a mix of housing types to cater for all !
