Queen Alexandra Hospital Staff Are A Credit To Their Profession

What a week I've had! I was given slightly over a

Queen Alexandra Hospital
week's notice to move house (but moved from a god awful one to a great one so I
got over that fairly quickly) and had to organise everything on an incredibly
tight budget. Then my fridge-freezer broke
and flooded my new kitchen – but if I thought THAT had been a heavy mop-up operation,
I’d seen nothing until my washing machine did the same two days later! Just when everything was almost getting
settled down my teenage son goes and severs the tip of his finger in one of the
heavy regulation fire doors in the flat!
Well, let’s get the story right… I shut his finger in the
door when I slammed it closed. As if
that guilt wasn’t enough all on its own, we were arguing at the time!
The fingertip literally went “splat” and he let out a blood
curdling scream that any parent will tell you is the second worst noise on
earth. The worst noise is the scream
they make and you know you’ve inflicted the pain that caused it. Bad times.
Rushed him off to hospital - after he had managed to hop all
over the flat (somehow into every single room) dripping blood everywhere – and the staff
were great. He was immediately taken to
the paediatric version of A&E and seen within minutes. After the initial x-ray though, showing he
had split the bone clean in two, they knew they would have to operate to save
it.
Because my son, being the no nonsense teenager that he likes
to think he is, was by this time being the bravest kid in the world, and said
he had no problem with them doing the operation under local anaesthetic, they
allowed us to go home.
We returned first thing in the morning and yes, there was a
wait as you’d expect with being slotted right into an NHS operating list, but
we had our own room, bed and freeview TV so it wasn’t much hardship!
Again, all the staff were wonderful. What struck me the most is that for a job
that’s got to be one of the most stressful in this country and quite possibly
one of the most thankless - in the main – everyone was so cheery and so
helpful. So here I am, thanking them
VERY MUCH! (especially the surgeon Eric,
a mad fella who had my son in stitches.
In all senses of the word).
