Police officers from Fratton Roads Policing Unit are appealing for witnesses to a collision on the hard shoulder of the M27 close to Junction 9 eastbound, on Sunday, February 27.

At around 6pm the 47 year old driver of a Ford Galaxy pulled onto the hard shoulder to fix a problem with his vehicle. He was about to pull away when his vehicle was hit by a Kia Picanto. Neither the driver of the Galaxy nor his 33-year-old female passenger, both from Southampton, was badly injured. However the driver of the Kia Picanto, an 84-year-old man from Southampton, died from his injuries in the early hours of Monday morning at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

Sergeant Mark Weller from Fratton Roads Policing Unit said: “We need to hear from anyone who saw the collision itself or either vehicle in the time leading up to the collision. At this stage we do not know the reason why the driver of the Kia Picanto went on to the hard shoulder, and need witnesses to help us with our investigation.”

Anyone with information should contact Sergeant Mark Weller on 101. You can also give information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
